Samantha Astarita Coach Spotlight

What's your GOTR name?

Coach Sam or Super Sam

How many seasons have you coached?

4

What site/school do you coach at?

I’ve coached two seasons at Riddle Brook elementary school in Bedford, and I’ve also coach two seasons at McKelvie intermediate school in Bedford.

What is your day job?

Supermom

What's your favorite part about coaching?

Coaching a running group of young girls allows me to instill a passion for fitness and teamwork, while fostering their self-confidence and resilience. Coaching these girls provides me with the opportunity to inspire, mentor, and witness their growth not just in running, but also in character, and self-esteem. My goal is to create a positive impact that extends beyond our GOTR season. I’m so grateful to be a part of this amazing program and to take part in each and everyone of their running journeys.

How did you first get involved with GOTR?

I became a coach for the first time when my oldest daughter was in fourth grade. I heard about the program through the school, and just knew I had to be a part of it!

What's your favorite GOTR memory?

I always love running one lap as an entire team on practice days! I also love the reaction the banana cheer gets from first timers, but my favorite GOTR memories will always be crossing the finish line on race day with these girls who have worked so hard all season. That final moment or pure joy is absolutely the best part of my season!

What other activities do you enjoy?

Volunteering at the schools, being a Girl Scout troop leader, skiing, tennis, yoga and of course running!

What's your favorite energy award?

I love giving the energy award to a runner who shows what it takes to be an outstanding teammate. Someone who encourages others to keep going and stop to help when it’s needed. Somebody who has their eyes on the coach while the lesson is being taught. Someone who displays positive energy.

What's your favorite GOTR lesson? Why?

My favorite GOTR practice is the positive self talk lesson because teaching kids to turn a negative into a positive is a crucial tool that equips them with resilience, problem-solving, skills, and a positive mindset. This valuable mindset helps them navigate challenges and build confidence, contributing to their overall well-being.

More about Coach Sam:

I consider myself a Swiftie who also loves being outdoors and spending time with people I love. I enjoy reading and watching baking shows with my girls, even though I am a horrible Baker! I love Taco Tuesdays, pumpkins in the fall, and skiing with my family during winter break in Killington, VT. I love dancing in the kitchen, coaching, chocolate, and a new pair of running shoes that make you feel like a superhero. I love balloons and believe you can never have too many. I love Christmas movies and cozy blankets. My favorite thing to do at the start of every practice is to ask my runners if they have any new jokes for me.
